New Making
Self trained, I made my first violin in 1988. Total production of violin to date is twenty-three violins and six mandolins(two F-models and four A-style)
Entering violin making competitions with the Violin Society of America gave me exposure to other workers. Compettitions judged for tone and workmanship provided one-on-one input with respected makers and instrumentalists in the field. Workshops, comments, and encouragement by the judges, conversations with other makers, and the opportunity to see high-level workmanship help me progress making my violins.
In 2004 in Portland, Oregon, the Violin Society of America held an international violin makers competition and convention. That year, the violin I entered into competition won a certificate of merit for tone.
My first mandolins were made in the early 2000's, commissioned by friends and other local clients. Violin making is a very rigorous discipline. Eash detail has very specific requirements. Mandolins are more varied and allow for more freedom of expression. Bringing together the necessary attention to detail and careful choice of quality, well-aged materials from violin making produced some mandolins that are as much a delight to look at as to play.
